چکیده

We report on a heat-induced transformation of the surface of α-alumina (0001) crystals which have a off-cut in the [1210] direction. Annealing the crystal causes the surface to transform into a regular array of (0001) and (1216) facets. The resultant faceted morphology represents the equilibrium state of the system. It is demonstrated that the average terrace periodicity is determined by the annealing temperature. Possible causes for the surface rearrangement are also discussed. The method could be used for producing templates with controlled periodicity for growth of nanostructure arrays.

Hydroxylated a-Al2O3 (0001) surfaces and metal/a-Al2O3 (0001) interfaces

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was applied to study the hydroxylation of a-Al2O3 (0001) surfaces and the stability of surface OH groups. The evolution of interfacial chemistry of the a-Al2O3 (0001) surfaces and metal/a-Al2O3 (0001) interfaces are well illustrated via modifications of the surface O1s spectra. Clean hydroxylated surfaces are obtained through waterand oxygen plasma treatment at ...

Effects of step–step interactions on the fluctuations of an individual step on a vicinal surface and its wavelength dependence

We relate properties of an anisotropic continuum model of a two-dimensional vicinal surface to those of a model with fluctuating and interacting steps. We show that analysis of the fluctuations of an individual step in the array provides information about the length scale on which the surface has reached equilibrium and can be used to estimate fundamental step parameters from locally equilibrat...

Interactions between Fluctuating Steps on Vicinal Surfaces: Edge Energy Effects in Reconstruction Induced Faceting

Surface reconstruction can generate effective attractive interactions between steps on vicinal surfaces, leading to the formation of step bunches. Modified repulsive interactions arise from the fluctuations of a step in the asymmetric environment at the edge of the step bunch. These are determined by a mapping to the ground state energy of a quantum particle between two rigid walls in an extern...

All-electron first-principles investigations of the energetics of vicinal Cu surfaces

Using first-principles calculations we studied the energetics surface energy, step energy, stability with respect to faceting of the lowand high-Miller-index vicinal Cu surfaces, namely, the 111 , 100 , 110 , 311 , 331 , 210 , 211 , 511 , 221 , 711 , 320 , 553 , 410 , 911 , and 332 surfaces. Our calculations are based on density-functional theory employing the all-electron full-potential linear...

Self-organized nanoscale pattern formation on vicinal Si(111) surfaces via a two-stage faceting transition.

We demonstrate a self-organized pattern formation on vicinal Si(111) surfaces that are miscut toward the [2;11] direction. All the patterns, consisting of a periodic array of alternating (7 x 7) reconstructed terraces and step-bunched facets, have the same periodicity and facet structure, independent of the miscut angle, while the width of the facets increases linearly with miscut angle. We att...
